New Campaign Demands Transparency and Accountability from Dark Money Mass Fiscal Alliance

Educators and Health Care Workers Call Out MassFiscal’s Campaign of Dirty Politics, Refusal to Disclose Donors

BOSTON — Massachusetts educators and health care workers today launched a new public education campaign, MassFiscal Exposed, demanding transparency and accountability from the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance, the Tea Party-affiliated dark money group that has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to influence our local elections without disclosing which corporations or individuals are funding its activities.

“MassFiscal claims to be a non-partisan, nonprofit organization, but its sole reason for existence is to hide the true source of dark money political spending against pro-worker state legislators,” said Tim Foley, Acting Executive Vice President of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, Massachusetts Division.

“Voters are fed up with dark money trying to influence our local elections with false claims, and we’re calling out MassFiscal’s dirty politics. We demand that they disclose their donors and restore transparency to Massachusetts elections,” said Steve Crawford, spokesman for MassFiscal Exposed.

Over the past few years, the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance has sent countless negative campaign mailings to Massachusetts voters, attacking local Democratic elected officials with fictitious accusations. By exploiting a loophole in the Internal Revenue Service code, MassFiscal spends unknown amounts of money on political activities without disclosing the source of its funds, including potentially out-of-state or foreign donations.

MassFiscal claims to be non-partisan and that it is “promoting social welfare,” but every member of MassFiscal’s board is a conservative Republican Party donor or operative, and they blatantly target only areas where right wing Republican challengers are running against Democratic elected officials.

Now, working people are pushing back with the MassFiscal Exposed campaign, which includes a website,, and online advertising calling for the end of MassFiscal’s dark money activities. MassFiscal Exposed is a joint project of the Massachusetts Teachers Association and 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, Massachusetts Division.

“MassFiscal consistently targets legislators who are standing up for working people because the corporations and wealthy individuals behind the organization don’t like it when workers have a voice in the political process,” said Foley.

“Dark money has no place in our local politics. The deck is already stacked against working people, and MassFiscal is spending unlimited and anonymous corporate money to keep it that way,” said Crawford. “Today, we’re saying: Enough is enough. MassFiscal, get your dark money out of Massachusetts!”
